The Facebook post was a hiker asking about dispersed camping in Pictured Rocks. A resounding No was given in response, and the hiker was warned rangers are everywhere out there. So, this morning, as my brain spun, I decided I better get my permits/campsite reservations for that section. Ended up that my sites were not available for the dates I originally had planned, so I will now have a small cushion of about 4 days.
It's kind of nice to know I have some cushion, but that potentially pushes my end date further into the colder fall months. Also, seeing these spots already filled up, makes me curious whether I should make sure I have reservations for many other locations!? With less than 60 days until I start, I guess I best get looking & reserving.
Put an inquiry out to the Facebook North Country Trail community about other necessary permits and reservations, and it sounds like the Border Route Trail and the Kekekabic Trail require permits, but can easily be obtained from nearby cities, through which I will pass. The other possible needs will be some of the state park/forest campgrounds that are popular, like Tahquamenon Falls area. So, I'll keep looking to make sure I am set, but I think I'm good for now.
